A Q&A with Phil Wilkinson, CX Director at insight6
Customer expectations have never stood still, and neither have the businesses that succeed. Throughout my career, I’ve seen technology, buying habits and customer expectations change dramatically, but one thing has remained constant: businesses that genuinely listen to their customers consistently outperform those that don’t.
What continues to motivate me is seeing the difference that great customer experience makes. It’s not just about happier customers; it’s about stronger commercial performance, more engaged employees and better long-term relationships.
I’ve always enjoyed getting under the skin of a business to understand what’s really happening. Whether it’s analysing customer feedback, improving operational performance or developing high-performing teams, I love helping organisations turn insight into practical improvements that make a measurable difference.
Since joining insight6 as Customer Experience Director for Staffordshire, I’ve been able to bring together everything I’ve learned over the past three decades to help businesses see themselves through their customers’ eyes and unlock opportunities they may never have realised existed.
For me, it starts with your people.
You can’t consistently deliver outstanding customer experiences if your employees don’t feel engaged, supported and valued themselves. Customers notice when people enjoy what they do. They notice enthusiasm, confidence and pride just as quickly as they notice frustration or disengagement.
That doesn’t mean employee experience and customer experience are separate conversations. They’re completely connected. Businesses that invest in their people create a culture where great customer service becomes the norm rather than something that’s forced.
Ultimately, if you look after your people, they’re far more likely to look after your customers.

One of the biggest mistakes is assuming customer experience belongs to one department.
In reality, every part of a business influences how customers feel. From marketing and sales through to operations, finance and aftercare, every interaction shapes their perception.
Another common mistake is collecting customer feedback but not acting on it. Many organisations ask the right questions but then fail to turn those insights into meaningful improvements.
Customer experience doesn’t need huge transformation programmes. The organisations that make the greatest progress are usually the ones that make small, consistent improvements based on what their customers are actually telling them.
Staffordshire has an incredible mix of ambitious independent businesses alongside well-established organisations, and that’s something I really enjoy.
It’s a county built on strong relationships, loyal customers and a real sense of community. Businesses here genuinely care about their reputation and the experience they provide, which creates a fantastic foundation for continuous improvement.
I’m excited to work with organisations across Staffordshire that want to grow, strengthen customer loyalty and build businesses that are known for delivering exceptional experiences.
Ask one simple question:
“What could we do to make your experience even better?”
Then genuinely listen to the answer.
Too often businesses assume they know what customers want, when in reality the answers are sitting right in front of them.
Choose one piece of feedback, act on it quickly and let your customers know you’ve listened. Small improvements made consistently often have a bigger impact than large projects that take months to deliver.
Make every customer feel valued.
Take the time to understand what matters to them before jumping to solutions. Keep your promises, communicate clearly and make it as easy as possible for customers to do business with you.
I’ve always believed that people may forget exactly what you said, but they’ll always remember how you made them feel.
Great customer experience isn’t created through grand gestures. It’s built through consistency, trust and a genuine commitment to doing the right thing every single day.
